The bursary is intended to support you with your living costs while you are undertaking your teacher training. For example, the bursary can be used to meet your travel costs while on placement, to purchase a laptop or towards rent etc.

If you interrupt or withdraw from your course, bursary payments will be suspended. You are entitled to be paid the bursary for each month up to and including the month you withdraw or interrupt. Please note that you are only entitled to receive a bursary payment for the month you withdraw or interrupt if you were still in attendance on the course on the 1st of that month.

If you have interrupted you are eligible to receive the remainder of your bursary when you return from interruption.

You have agreed to the Department of Education's terms and conditions in order to receive the bursary. You have also agreed to return any overpayments to UCL. An overpayment will be any instalment which was paid to you for which you were not eligible according to your pattern of attendance on the programme and in accordance with the terms and conditions. If you do not meet the criteria for a training bursary, you can apply for a tuition fee loan and maintenance loan from Student Finance.

How do I apply for a bursary? They are overworked, undervalued and underpaid — so who can blame them for opting for lucrative jobs abroad or quitting the classroom altogether? After my own brief spell in the classroom, I know that teaching isn't for the faint-hearted. My experience has left me with a lifelong admiration for teachers and the sterling job they do. I also am expected to monitor students between multiple classrooms when they are practicing instruments and some singers who are practicing outdoors. I LOVE working with the kids by getting to know them and building relationships to work with individuals and smaller groups. I feel that — on top of the major systemic issues and the rubbish situation of the Covid pandemic — the class sizes are just far too much for me to ever be able to plan for and manage effectively.

I feel like most teacher training programmes are asking us to tick boxes that conform to the dysfunctional norm. It will only get worse. Reading your post and some of the other comments has made me feel less alone and given a bit of clarity as to what I might consider next.

Thanks for your comment. The faults are absolutely systemic, as you say, which is unfortunately the case for this country as a whole at the moment. Box-ticking is all that the government wants from schools these days. Fuck it!

And at least you took it. You are absolutely, categorically not alone Sophie. Without sounding too dramatic, your article which by the way is incredibly witty and well-written! I applied during the pandemic and so was only able to get a few days in a school- I liked working with the children and being in the classroom.

I did Educational studies for undergrad, which I enjoyed, but it was a lot of sociology and no practical experience. I felt like the PGCE was a natural progression for me. Every week I continue with this course I feel a little less like myself, to the point where pointless tick box exercises, countless forms, handbooks, readings, endless reflections and assignment preparation is taking up all of my time.

Having some more practical tips over the past 6 weeks in uni before placement would have given me some more confidence and built up my ability before being dropped in at deep end. Again, thank you for writing this article. Wishing you health and happiness for the future for these are the things that really matter. Thanks for your comment, and thank you for your lovely words! The PGCE is a nightmare as it is, let alone without all the difficulties of the pandemic on top of it.

The lack of practical experience on your undergraduate course sounds like a massive oversight for a degree focused on education. Thank you again for the lovely words. It makes me incredibly happy to hear that, and it helps me feel a bit less alone too when people share their stories. Look after yourself, and good luck in whatever path you decide to take next. I also wanted to say a big thank you for this article and for your honesty.

I have taken the decision this week to withdraw from my Secondary Maths School Direct course. Your words have made me feel so much better about things. You are commenting using your WordPress. Either way, best of luck Jen, and I hope you find the right balance for you. Hey, Fantastic article and so relatable to my situation — giving me the courage to realise I am not alone in feeling like this and I am about to quit teacher training 7 months in!
