Wainwright rated it as a great climb but I shall always now rate it as one of the greatest descents in all of the Lake District. For three reasons, first the path down the edge itself, always exciting and challenging enough to keep the attention intense. Thirdly, for being the perfect conclusion to a walk which is without flaw. The descent of Fleetwith Edge came to a sad but inevitable conclusion, the final part almost as enthralling as the uppermost reaches with Honister Pass below me providing superb views.
Equally so was the view back to Gatesgarth from where I started. As I stepped off Fleetwith Edge and onto the flat of the valley bottom I felt a pang of regret that it was all over but this was more than compensated by the bank of new memory I had now stored. I walked back to the car park with a big grin.

Go through the farm via the gate at Grid Ref NY and follow this path over the bridge at the southern end of Buttermere. After the bridge at Grid Ref NY , you can turn right to go around Buttermere, but instead continue straight onto a path through the trees. Follow this pass, which is fairly well maintained, up to the crossroads at Grid Ref NY Turn left at these crossroads and this path will lead you to the summit at Grid Ref NY Although there doesn't appear to be much in it.
Haystacks Summit Cairn Haystacks Summit Tarn 4 Bear right and cross the summit area to locate the top of the the paths beyond heading south east. There are two, the lower path can be a little boggy, but they both join back up at Inominate Tarn. Continue on to reach Black Beck Tarn. From here either go straight over the grass bank ahead, or bear left and ascend the steps on to Green Crag. The views are worth the latter.
Rejoin the wide path from Black Beck Tarn bearing left. The path soon turns left and is joined by another coming in from Brandreth.
Very shortly after, approx m yards , a large domed rock bars the way ahead. The left side path drops steeply down, instead turn right here and follow the path as it bears right and passes close to a rocky knoll then descends towards the river.
Dubs Quarry is now straight ahead. Continue on the path, descending, and cross the river by the stepping stones. Innominate Tarn Looking towards Dubs Quarry 5 Once across the river turn left, do not drop into the ghyll, and bear left again to pick up the path above Warnscale Beck.
This path although easy, it is occasionally quite steep, and mainly covered in loose gravel which requires careful foot placement. On reaching the road above the cottage, turn left to return to the car park. Hill data is derived from Database of British and Irish hills which is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.
